I, much like you I’m sure, was eagerly awaiting the return of the photo gallery. So rather then wasting time re-importing all the images into the new version of gallery, I brought the old version back. I will try to upgrade as time allows. Should only be a matter of fixing some columns in the database so it should take less time then restarting from scratch.
The only problem at this time is the css appears to be screwed up. I have no idea why, everything was just a straight copy from the old server. So technically my template and css mods should still be there. Ah well, I’ll try to fix that too.

The trip to the cabin the first weekend in April has been canceled. Sorry, but the folks have decided to go up and since they do own the place it’s kinda hard to throw my weight around ;)

This page is now being served off the new box! The transition took less time then I expected. Postfix, cyrus, apache, mysql, and the firewall are all up and running. I am having issues with the photo gallery but that is because of a version change. The database format changed when they went from alpha to beta. I expected this but it may take me a few days to get it back online.

Well I ordered the new server the other day. At Stefan’s request I asked for a Gentoo install (I prefer Slack myself). Here are the specs:

  • AMD Barton 3000
  • 1024MB RAM
  • 36GB SCSI 10K HD
  • 1000GB Bandwidth
  • 100Mbit Uplink
  • 8 IPs (5 Usable)

It is a dedicated box from CrucialParadigm. I don’t usually make a decision like this without a reference but they’ve been very helpful throughout the process and I couldn’t find any serious complaints online (which might be bad). It should be online in the next few days. Things will be switched to the new box sometime next month.

Work is very interesting. I’ve spent all my time working on something Tresys is developing called the SEFramework. Basically we are developing a new language to describe security needs in terms of component interaction. While we hope that the end result will be abstract enough to apply in many environments our initial target is SELinux. Of course the goal is to have the language tools and IDE released under GPL when completed. The office is empty since everyone has been down at the Symposium but that makes it easier to be productive without distractions like meetings ;)

Well Stefan added a RSS feed for the forums. I thought it might be useful here as well. Although I doubt anybody really needs a feed for the random thoughts here it definitely can’t hurt.

Some friends are in town and we’re heading out for Sushi/Hibachi tonight. I really wanted to go a Sushi King or Sushi Sono in Columbia but all good Sushi places in the area are closed on Sundays. This is a new place so we’ll have to see how it goes.

Next planned trip to the cabin is the first weekend in April (1st - 3rd).

We (Go-Linux [Stefan and myself]) are shopping for a new home. We might get another box at ServerBeach but we’re trying to keep our options open. If anyone has any suggestions (good or bad experiences with hosting) please let us know. My email address is at the bottom of the page.

Specs we’re looking for:

  • 2GHz processor (AMD or Intel)
  • 1G of RAM
  • 60G hard disk, RAID is nice if it’s cheap
  • 10Mbps link
  • either unlimited BW (about 3.2TB on a 10Mbps line) or a high limit in the 1TB-2TB range (2TB is what we have currently) so we don’t have to worry about paying for overage

The transition will take place sometime next month. It should be transparent as we will strive to have everything mirrored on the new server before switching DNS.

I added some photos from the past 2 weekends to the photo gallery. Works still going really well. It’s challenging but I’m really enjoying the project I’m working on.

The trek back to the top of the hill kinda reminded me of a mountain climbing expedition.

This is one of the sunset shots we saw during the snow shoe hike.

I started my new job at Tresys Technology last Tuesday. My first day happened to coincide with the begining of one of their SELinux policy training courses so my first three days were informative but uneventful. I’m really looking forward to working at Tresys, they have some very intelligent people, heavily support open source, and it promises to be a challenging and enjoyable workplace.

We (about 11 at the last head count) are going to the cabin this weekend so look for new additions to the gallery under Real Life early next week. Until then please check out Stefan’s work-in-progress of a rewrite for the Go-Linux homepage here.

Jake taking up all the space on the couch… he’ll probably be in the same spot this weekend at the cabin.

I got bored and decided to add a few simple features to the home brewed blog thingie. I never much cared for the term blog… trendy. But I gave in since I realized this isn’t really “news”. It’s a web log.

I removed the comments link because I never finished writing the user registration/validation and I didn’t like the pointless links. I don’t think I’ll ever write it to tell you the truth…. guess I’m just not interested in what you have to say about my blog ;) If you want to make comments email me.

I added some navigation features. You will find a “link” has appeared at the bottom of each entry. This should allow easy internal/external linking to specific items. Since I was adding this I figured it was a good time to enhance the pagination so you will now find previous and next links at the bottom of the page. I still want to make this a little more friendly. Perhaps something that shows all entries for a given day, month, week, and year. But I fixed my boredom so that will have to wait till another day.

Broom Hockey
I’m going to try to start linking some more of the photos here… no reason to keep them hidden under Real Life. This first one is of the soon to be infamous Poconos Broom Hockey team out for a little practice on the lake. It was a solid 6 inches so perfect for a little game (4 hours actually). It’s Guy and Jack on the ground, me (left standing), Cath, Bobby, Wendy, Riz, and Karin.

That one should give you a better idea of the layout. That’s Guy, Riz, and Bobby.

Well it’s just about official. I’m finishing up my last week of school. I already finished Cultural Anthropology and I’ve got two classes in Mythology left. I am knee deep in the search for a new job so if anyone could put in a good word or knows someplace that could use a recent graduate looking I’d be thankful. My interests lie in the security, networks, and kernel code. The lower level the more interesting it is. No “.Net” offers will be considered ;)

For anyone interested I reconfigured my home network to make room for a Dell Poweredge 2200 I “inherited” from a friend (many thanks!!). An image of the old layout can be found here. The new layout can be found here. I haven’t decided where I’m going to place the new box but my main reason for the network changes was to give me some freedom here. Now I have the ports where I need them.

Just finished adding the last of my classwork to the school section. Hopefully someone will find it useful. I never had any idea how time consuming putting it all online would be. Probably averaged 1-2 hours per class and 3-4 hours for the rewrite of the php code.

I head back to class tomorrow. I have Classical Mythology and Cultural Anthropology this January then I should be all finished my undergrad work. Happy new year!
